The Gramercy area has preserved some of the charm of 19th century New York: brownstone mansions and townhouses, the city's early large apartment buildings, and some wooded parks. (A key to Gramercy Park is a true New York status symbol, shared by only a few.)
The western parts of Gramercy are distinctly commercial but the central to eastern blocks include many quiet and leafy streets. The neighborhood has a generally middle class feel, even though there are both some quite inexpensive and some very high end apartments here.
To the North of Gramercy Park, the areas known as Murray Hill and Kips Bay include some of the city's prettiest blocks, treelined with rows of Greek Revival styled Townhouses and Brownstones. As Murray Hill approaches Midtown, more and more modern highrises appear. Many of these buildings have luxury facilities such as gyms and swimming pools.
