The streets of the Upper West Side are typically lined with brownstones and townhouses. High ceilings and exposed brick are typical features of these west-side apartments.
Further towards the Hudson there are numerous large and more modern apartment buildings. Coming from fairly socially mixed beginnings, the Upper West Side has been "yuppified", resulting in extensive building renovations and restorations.

Today, the Upper West Side is a very fashionable address, with Broadway as the hub of some of the best and most interesting stores in the city. A trip to Zabar's, Fairway Market and Citarella's is a must!
Housing prices run the gamut, with the most affordable housing above 96th St. The housing and the neighborhood is good all the way up to Columbia University at 116th St.
